Correspondence, membership book, a record book, and minutes book for the Rhode Island Alpha chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. The correspondence (1828-1894) concerns establishment of the Providence chapter, membership, elections and appointments, invitations to give orations before the members, and questions for initiates. The membership book (1829?-1949) includes annual lists of members, subjects of orations, laws and by-laws of the society (1830?-1905), and copies of early correspondence. The record book (1829-1881) contains copies of correspondence (1829) and minutes (1829-1881). The minutes book dates from 1881-1936.

In 1917 the university established the Brown War Records Bureau, whose intention was to "collect and preserve a record of all Brown men who are serving in the present war". Brown faculty, students and alumni who were in the military were asked to fill out a small card called "Are you in the war?" and to send original letters, clippings or photographs which "have any bearing on the service of Brown men in the war."
